In 2024 I was given the opportunity to create an animated segment for a short documentary film titled Knuck & Knuckle. The film follows Lee Reeves' story which is a gripping tale of how a young Limerick man uses his love of boxing to overcome the pain of losing his mother to suicide. Having turned his grief into an energy that became his route to recovery and survival, Reeves is now a keen advocate for boxing and sport, as tools for positive mental health for young men, particularly those from the Irish Traveller community where suicide rates are seven times higher than average.
I was given full creative freedom for this animated piece which allowed me to use a woodblock print style and limited colour palette to highlight the characters against the dark environment in which they reside in. This minute long video was then inserted into the final short film and was accompanied by music which brought the final piece together.
Styleframes completed for this project. I was given full creative control over this animated segment for the short film. Influenced by woodblock prints, I leaned into dark visuals with a limited colour palette.
